Acne, contrary to popular belief, doesn’t just affect teenagers. It can also appear later in life. The truth is, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to acne-prone skin care. Finding an acne skin care routine can take everything. From trial and error with a plethora of products to regular visits to the dermatologist and possibly even a complete lifestyle review.

To find an acne skin care routine that really works, HealthShots spoke to Karan Bhaskar, skin care expert and consultant at Clinique India.

Here is an acne-prone skin care routine that can eventually make your skin clearer:

Handle acne with care:

  1. The first step in fighting pimples is to be as gentle as possible. No matter what you are applying, do not rub or massage it into your skin. This will only make the acne worse.
  2. Applying products to oily, sweaty or tired skin is also a no-no.
  3. Keep your hands away from your face! Dirt or bacteria from your fingertips is the last thing your skin needs.
  4. Resist the urge to pick at those pesky pimples, even if it seems like the hardest thing to do.
  5. Along with that, make sure you clean it gently. Contrary to popular belief, peeling skin layers does not prevent acne. Using a harsh cleanser can remove the protective barrier, making it more prone to dryness and irritation. Instead, befriend a balance cleaner.

Well hydrated skin is satisfied skin

Avoid over drying your skin to combat oil production. If your skin surface is very dry and dehydrated, your sebaceous glands may secrete excessive amounts of sebum to compensate, which can worsen acne. Using a light gel moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated will keep your skin balanced.

Dirty scalp means more acne

You may not believe that your scalp has anything to do with facial acne, but it does play an important role. Bhaskar suggests keeping your scalp and skin clean at all times, as dandruff flakes and dirt from your scalp can clog your forehead pores. Also, the use of hair products that contain preservatives or fragrances can make breakouts worse, so they should be avoided.

Incorporate an acid into your skin care routine

Bhaskar recommends using an acid to cleanse your skin. Salicylic acid, kojic acid and glycolic acid are excellent acne treatments. They all help to stimulate the growth of new skin cells by removing dead skin cells. An acid can also be used to treat inflammation. However, as with any powerful active ingredient, proceed with caution. To avoid dryness and irritation, start with a low concentration and work your way up.

Include these healing ingredients in your acne skin care routine

Incorporate ingredients like calamine, allantoin, chamomile, hibiscus or vitamin B3 into blemished skin. As all these ingredients help the skin to heal faster, they soothe and soothe any inflammation and provide relief from irritated blemishes.
