Snail mucin benefits for smooth, anti-aging skin

The Korean skin care industry is all about perfecting and maintaining glass skin, but there’s one ingredient that shouldn’t be ignored: snail mucin. Well, in the world of vampire and bird poop facials, snail mucin isn’t too weird for achieving ‘brighter than the pole star’ skin. To get this from snails, you don’t really need to let them crawl all over your face. Many skin care brands have made this easier as they are packing snail extracts for a less extreme experience.

For the uninitiated, snail mucin is a slimy secretion from snails. Now considered a rave ingredient in the K-beauty world, snail mucin is secreted when the poor creature is stressed. Its viscous texture and the fact that it is the excretion of a living being, raises curiosity around snail mucin. But when it comes to having great skin, nothing is too crazy, right?

Here’s what an expert has to say about snail mucin

Dr. Navnit Haror, skin care expert, founder and director of Derma Miracle Clinic, spoke with HealthShots about this skin care ingredient.

β€œIt may seem strange at first, but snail mucin contains glycolic acid which acts as an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells from your face. It also contains enzymes to nourish the surface layer of our epidermis. Copper peptides help fight wrinkles by filling them with collagen,” says Dr. Haror.

Yes! This powerful liquid has many benefits for people who want to look healthy without any of the hassle or pain associated with getting adequate amounts from dietary sources alone.

Well, giving in to the urge to treat my fine lines and fill in my parched, parched skin, I gave it a try. The market is flooded with all kinds of products like snail secretion moisturizing face cream, snail essence and more. Thanks to that, I didn’t have to make eye contact with the slime maker himself!

Here are the skin changes I saw after using snail mucin for a month:

  1. I applied a snail mucin essence each day twice. However, on certain days, I missed it from time to time. I started using it reluctantly, but the first signs of hydration got me hooked!
  2. I started with cleansing my skin before applying snail mucin. The nutrient-rich, serum-like consistency was easy to apply all over my face. It absorbed quickly into my skin, which I then coated with a thick moisturizer. This 3-step routine made up a perfect combination to treat my damaged skin repair.
  3. However, its high claims for treating hyperpigmentation issues like scars or dark spots from sunlight exposure (you’re not alone!)
  4. One thing this disgusting but great snail mucin did was even out the skin tone of my face. My forehead looks less tanned than it used to be!
  5. A month is too early to comment on its anti-aging benefits. But I see a lot of potential in its collagen-boosting qualities, which can improve elasticity and prevent wrinkles in the long run.

According with the doctor. Haror, snail mucin has the following skin benefits:

  1. It helps in the treatment of acne, which is one of the most common skin problems. Its antibacterial properties help prevent acne.
  2. It effectively fades hyperpigmentation, reduces redness and evens out skin tone.
  3. It also has anti-aging effects that help hide fine wrinkles around the eyes and forehead.
  4. Snail mucin contains hyaluronic acid, which helps keep the skin hydrated and firm.

Should you rush to buy snail mucin skincare products?

It’s no surprise that this ingredient is popularized by the Korean skin care industry. Despite being an elaborate ritual, some people may find it too time-consuming or expensive. People who have tried it swear by its benefits on their skin as it contains glycolic acid. You can use a glycolic acid serum if the consistency of snail mucin bothers you. Using snail mucin for dehydrated skin can be impressive, but its anti-aging benefits seem far away. So count your patience before you get it for yourself!
